Johns bros cruise past Johnson, Frazier for men’s doubles crown
The last time Ben and Collin Johns played JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier in Las Vegas, they dropped the first two games before pulling off a massive comeback to take the win in five games.
The top seeds needed only three games on Sunday, as they came away with an 11-9, 11-3, 11-4 victory.
This win ends what was an impressive campaign for the Johns bros, earning the title without dropping a single game.
“I thought we played solid,” B. Johns noted. “[JW and Dylan] are a very good team with great hands, and they get to the kitchen a lot. I felt like we played a lot of slow kitchen line points, so it was just about waiting for counters and playing solid points from there. Collin was getting ahold of a lot of backhand counters, so I thought it was a clean match.”
Even though both teams are among the best in men’s doubles, Sunday marked the first time that they have faced off in 2024.
“We love playing against that team,” C. Johns said. “They play our sort of by-the-book style, so we hope to play them more this year.”
That could very well happen, since all four players have already qualified for the year-end CIBC PPA Finals set to run Dec. 4-8 in San Clemente, CA.
No. 3 seeds Matt Wright and Federico Staksrud took the bronze medal over Andrei Daescu and James Ignatowich 12-10, 11-1.
