Johnson, Humberg ease past Wright, Dizon in two games
Jorja Johnson and Mari Humberg overpowered No. 2 seeds Etta Wright and Meghan Dizon 11-5, 11-8 to book their spots in the women’s doubles final.
The No. 9 seeds had their fair share of battles on Saturday, with both their Round of 16 and quarterfinal matchups going to three games and lasting over an hour.
They were much more efficient in their final bout of the day.
Despite the match not starting until after 9pm local time in Salt Lake City, Johnson and Humberg brought an unmatched energy that carried over into their game play.
The combination of Johnson’s raw power and Humberg’s expert placement and use of spin lent itself to well-executed attacks that proved to be too much for their opponents to handle.
With this win, Johnson and Humberg are into their first final together.
“We’ve made it to two semis and this was our third, and we really wanted to make a final together,” Humberg shared. “Jorja has been to multiple finals obviously, and this is my first. She pushed through for me, and I really appreciate that.”
Top seeds Anna Bright and Rachel Rohrabacher await the tandem in the gold medal match.
