Mission accomplished: Staksrud, Tardio ease past Johnson, Frazier for first title together
OVERLAND PARK, KS - Federico Staksrud and Gabriel Tardio completed their massively impressive run in Kansas City with a men’s doubles gold.
They had the tall task of facing top-seeded JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier in the final, but they proved they were more than up to the task with an 11-4, 11-8, 11-2 victory.
This is Staksrud’s second men’s doubles title of the year, and he’s taken down Johnson and Frazier to claim both.
The Argentinian credits the tandem—who are the No. 1 ranked men’s doubles team in pickleball—with helping him reach the highest level of play.
“I think Gabe and I became better and better because of [JW and Dylan] because we practiced with them and because they’re a great team,” he said. “They’re great players, and they’re great people. I’m grateful to be their friend, and I’m happy that they are the Number 1 team in the world because they deserve it.”
Apart from the incredibly high level pickleball from both sides, there was one moment of the match that deserves more attention.
In between the second and third games, Tardio took a moment to replenish himself with nothing other than a piece of pizza.
“I didn’t have a good breakfast, so I needed some extra carbs, and that was it,” the 18-year-old explained.
The jury is still out on if a slice of pepperoni makes you play a better right side, but it didn't seem to hurt Tardio at all as he and Staksrud sprinted to victory in Game 3.
In the bronze medal match, No. 6 seeds Christian Alshon and Hayden Patriquin bested the Johns bros 11-4, 11-3 for their first medal together.
