Rematch set: Waters and Bright, Kawamotos to clash for women’s doubles crown

The pairings of Anna Leigh Waters/Anna Bright and Jackie Kawamoto/Jade Kawamoto will meet for the second time in 2025 on Championship Sunday in Lakeland.

Both duos booked their spots in the final with straight-game victories Saturday afternoon at Beerman Family Tennis Center.

The Kawamotos took the court first and beat No. 2 seeds Parris Todd /Tyra Black by an 11-3, 11-3 score line before Waters/Bright beat Kate Fahey/Tina Pisnik 11-5, 11-4.

It was a resurgent performance for Waters/Bright, since they dropped a game to Fahey/Pisnik in their most recent meeting at Worlds earlier this month.

Waters talked about the role that starting Game 2 off well played in the win.

“I think today, after winning the first game, we were really just trying to stick to the game plan and stay locked in, and I think we did a really good job of that and started the second game really strong,” she noted. “A lot of times when we’ve lost, we’ve won the first and lost the second, so I feel like if we can win the first game and keep that energy going into the second, those results can be a lot different.”

One of those aforementioned losses came at the hands of the Kawamoto sisters, who won the semifinal clash between the two teams in Cincinnati 7-11, 11-6, 11-9 back in September.

Bright gave some insight into the mentality heading into the rematch.

“Mentally, Anna Leigh and I have found our flow and have gotten better at not panicking, and so I think that’s going to be a part of it tomorrow,” she said. “Pickleball is a game of runs, and everyone here knows that. You can feel like God for a few points and then feel like you just picked up a paddle.”

The mental fortitude of both pairings will be tested on Sunday.
