Rettger, Shick edge Johns, Buckner in mixed doubles
MESA, AZ - In a highly competitive three-game match, No. 30 seeds Rachel Rettger and Collin Shick prevailed against No. 23 seeds Brooke Buckner and Collin Johns.
After splitting the first two games, the pair jumped out to a quick lead in the third and switched sides with a 6-3 advantage.
Johns and Buckner made a run of their own from there, though, and regained the lead at 8-7.
But Rettger and Schick held their nerves in the face of their opponents’ run, regained the serve, and took Game 3 11-8 to book their spot in the next round.
“I think I just made some errors, and Rachel kept pumping me up,” Schick said when asked how the pair stayed in it mentally. “We just settled down, stayed in it, and worked the points a little more.”
Next up for Rettger and Schick is a matchup against No. 9 seeds Lucy Kovalova and Matt Wright in the Round of 32 later Wednesday afternoon.
