Rohrabacher, Bright dethrone Waters, Parenteau for gold in Atlanta
Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau are the most dominant duo in women’s doubles, but that wasn't the case this time around in Georgia.
Second-seeded Rachel Rohrabacherand Anna Bright claimed gold on Sunday with an 11-3, 11-9, 9-11, 11-5 victory at Life Time Peachtree Corners.
“[Waters and Parenteau] are really good, and they’re the pinnacle of women’s doubles,” said Bright, following the triumph. “This win really means a lot to us.”
It marked Rohrabacher and Bright’s first Grand Slam title together.
Rohrabacher hit a two-handed backhand counter to secure the championship trophy.
“I was definitely shaking a little bit because I messed up the first match point we had,” she said. “I wanted to be solid, not do anything extra, and keep doing what we were doing the whole match.”
Rohrabacher and Bright were the first team to beat Waters and Parenteau back in March at the Veolia Austin Open.
This time, though, it was featured on a national broadcast.
“I feel like pickleball is really turning a corner. I spent a little extra time this morning on my makeup because I knew I was going to be on TV,” mentioned Bright. “Thank you to everyone tuning into pickleball. This is so exciting.”
