
Smith, Tuionetoa fight through wind to stun Waters, Parenteau in three games
The first-time partnership of Callie Smith/Etta Tuionetoa pulled off what will probably go down as the upset of the tournament on Humana Championship Court, a 4-11, 11-8, 11-8 victory over Anna Leigh Waters/Catherine Parenteau.
It looked like the top seeds would cruise to a routine victory when they earned a 5-0 lead in Game 2 after taking the first, but Smith/Tuionetoa fought all the way back to eventually steal the second game and extend the match.
The No. 5 seeds again trailed 4-8 in the deciding game, but they went on to score the match’s final seven points to close out the massive upset and hand Waters/Parenteau their first loss of 2025.
The difference-maker in the match was the wind.
Both of Smith/Tuionetoa’s runs came on the ‘good’ side, where they were playing into the wind. They finished the contest on that side, too, which helped them overcome that four-point deficit in the third game.
As the wind grew in strength in Game 3, Waters asked the referees to consider moving the match inside but was unsuccessful, as she and Parenteau saw several of their shots fly long with the wind at their backs.
Smith spoke about the experience competing in the wind.
“We’ve had to deal with some weather today, but I feel like Etta and I hung tough,” she said. “I would like to play [Anna Leigh and Catherine] again in fair weather when things are a little more even on both sides, but I’m happy that we fought hard.”
Smith/Tuionetoa will look to make it to Championship Sunday when they face No. 6 seeds Lea Jansen/Lucy Kovalova in the semifinals.
