Sock, Goins to clash for men’s singles title
Jack Sock and John Lucian Goins punched their respective tickets to the men’s singles final at the Opendoor Pickleball World Championships with impressive victories on Saturday.
Sock earned his spot with an 11-5, 8-11, 11-1 victory over No. 3 seed Hunter Johnson, who was red-hot after capturing consecutive international titles in Australia and Hong Kong.
Sock saw a late lead slip away in the second game, but he found his best level in the third.
“If I’m the aggressor, I like the chances at the net trying to dictate points, and if they play great, too good, but for the first game and a half that was kind of me. I feel like in the middle of the second game [Hunter] switched up and started coming in a lot more, trying to apply some pressure," he explained. "It’s hard to pass out there; the wind’s kind of swirling, everyone covers the net so well now, and yeah he was able to get the second game there in a close one, and I’m just happy with the mentality in the third.”
Sock has been on quite the run this week, beating No. 2 seed Federico Staksrud in the Round of 16, No. 5 seed Roscoe Bellamy in the quarterfinals, and Johnson in the semis.
Now, he’s into his first final since January and is one win away from winning his first career singles title on the PPA Tour.
“It’s definitely been a journey—a lot of personal things, a lot of physical things—just getting back to feeling good on the court like this again,” he shared. “I just want to lock in and do it for all my pickleball haters and try and get a title tomorrow."
Standing in Sock’s way will be John Lucian Goins, who dispatched No. 4 seed Christian Alshon 11-4, 11-9 in the other semifinal.
Goins is in the running for his second consecutive singles title after also striking gold in Virginia Beach.
The 18-year-old stayed in top form after beating top seed Chris Haworth in the quarterfinals, and he will look to maintain that form on Sunday when he and Sock face off for the first time since 2025.
