Waters, Johns overcome slow start to oust Johnson siblings in four games
Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns captured their 41st mixed doubles title together with a 5-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-1 victory over Jorja and JW Johnson to close out Championship Sunday at Darling Tennis Center.
Both members of the top-seeded tandem came out flat in the first game, perhaps as a result of their matches earlier in the day in women’s doubles and men’s doubles.
That, combined with stellar play from the Johnsons, led to the top seeds being outclassed in Game 1.
They found their form from there, though, and were never really threatened as they took the next three games to secure their fourteenth title of 2024.
Even though PPA action in Sin City is finished, Major League Pickleball will take center stage over the next three days for MLP Las Vegas.
Johns spoke about how he’s feeling going into MLP after coming away with two titles on Sunday.
“This week has definitely felt longer than it probably was,” he said. “It wasn’t the strongest start in singles, but I’m happy to finish with two titles. As for the rest of the time, I’m looking forward to playing AL tomorrow.”
Waters and Johns will go head-to-head when the New Jersey 5s face the Carolina Pickleball Club on Monday afternoon.
That match (and all Championship Court action) will be streamed on Pickleballtv, while Grandstand Court action will be available on the MLP YouTube.
