When pickleball meets Whataburger
DALLAS, TX - Who would’ve thought that fashion, pickleball, and a Texas fast food restaurant could all intersect? Enter World No. 1 Anna Leigh Waters.
After winning her sixth consecutive Triple Crown at July's Seattle Open, Waters' outfit drew just as much attention as her victories on Championship Sunday.
The 16-year-old sported a bright orange FILA top and orange and white striped shorts, so the Instagram account @memesofpickleball was quick to liken her gear to easily recognizable logo of the beloved burger chain, Whataburger.
This wasn't the account's first outfit critique of a pro. It appears to be one of their favorite kind of memes.
“@memesofpickleball said I looked like the Whataburger logo with the bright orange and white on my outfit,” explained Waters with a laugh. “I didn’t take it as an insult, though. I took it as a compliment because I love Whataburger.”
Instead of letting the meme run its course and waiting for the next one to go viral, she took matters into her own hands.
“I put my own spin on it,” said Waters. “We went to a Whataburger and did a photoshoot with the orange and white FILA outfit. I really just embraced it.”
The photos depict Waters standing in front of a Whataburger restaurant entrance and proudly holding up a burger and striped cup.
“I ate Whataburger, ordered some fries, then posted the pictures on Instagram. It was just fun,” remarked Waters.
“Slaying the courts one @whataburger at a time,” Waters' creative caption read.
The post received plenty of praise for its creativity and playfulness.
It even caught the attention of fellow pro, Alix Truong, who commented: “That’s iconic.”
“Whataburger DMed me about it. They loved it, and I was so happy that FILA did something with it so I could collab with them because the whole thing was just super funny,” said Waters. “I’m hoping that maybe that will happen again in the future.”
