Wright, Tellez use late run to make Round of 16 in mixed doubles
PHOENIX, AZ - The mixed doubles match between No. 18 seeds Etta Wright and Pablo Tellez and No. 12 seeds Lacy Schneemann and Travis Rettenmaier was just about as close as a match can be, if we look at the score line.
The teams split the first two games 11-9 each way and changed ends in Game 3 with Wright and Tellez leading 6-5.
A run by their opponents saw them lose that lead and go down 7-9, but the chemistry that Wright and Tellez have developed throughout their three tournaments together this year helped them regroup when they needed it most.
“Pablo was reminding me to be patient and just to keep fighting” Wright shared. “I think just having that mutual support really helped us through a tight last game.”
It did indeed help, as the pair slowly grinded out the next four points through multiple side outs to book their spot in the Round of 16.
They will take on No. 5 seeds Jackie Kawamoto and Riley Newman on Thursday.
