Dallas shines in mixed doubles, battles past St. Louis in regulation
The Dallas Flash closed out their semifinal series against the St. Louis Shock with a 3-1 victory to advance to the Premier level final.
The Shock came out swinging, as Anna Bright/Kate Fahey dominated Jorja Johnson/Tyra Black by a 25-11 score line in women’s doubles, but JW Johnson/Augie Ge evened the match with a 25-20 win over Hayden Patriquin/Gabe Tardio in men’s doubles.
Mixed doubles is where things got interesting.
As the higher-seeded team, St. Louis was able to react to Dallas’ mixed doubles pairings; they sent out Fahey/Tardio to take on the Flash’s top mixed duo of Johnson/Johnson.
That game nearly ended in disaster for Dallas when Fahey/Tardio had match point at 24-19, but the Johnson siblings pulled off an impressive comeback to take it 26-24.
The second mixed doubles matchup followed a similar tune, with the underdogs Black/Ge earning a 24-21 lead over Bright/Patriquin.
They, however, were able to finish off the upset and clinch the series victory for the Flash.
That win sends Dallas to the finals, of course, but it also makes Ge a perfect 8-0 this postseason.
The No. 38 pick in April’s draft says that extra mental preparation has contributed to his recent success.
“I’ve been doing a lot of manifesting and affirmations and visualization, so I think that has helped a ton,” he shared. “It’s a lot of mental training on top of the physical.”
Dallas will face the New Jersey 5s—who swept the Texas Ranchers earlier on Saturday—in the final.
The squads have faced off twice in 2024, with both Dallas and New Jersey winning one bout in regulation.
