Pickleball helps Dan Muraski find joy after loss: 'It gives people kind of a purpose'

Life Time Bloomington North in Minnesota is home to a pickleball enthusiast extraordinaire: Dan Muraski.

Now 83, Muraski is the facility’s lead ambassador for the ARORA program, a community and fitness initiative designed for active adults ages 55 and up.

"I like pickleball because anybody can do it," praised Muraski, during a recent interview with WCCO-TV. "It’s easy, it’s fun, it’s very social, and I think it gives people kind of a purpose."

That sense of purpose became even more important a year ago after his wife of nearly five decades passed away.

She was his soulmate and best friend.

"My wife is 100% Finnish, farm girl, the sweetest, kindest person you’ve ever met," he described. "She put up with me for 47 years. Loved every minute of it. I miss her a lot."

Coping with that loss has been especially challenging, but his work and pickleball play at Life Time have been a vital source of comfort.

Over 19 years in various roles, he’s become a local legend at the club, known by everyone for his warm, friendly presence.

He was even gifted a custom paddle—featuring a photo of himself on the paddle face—for his most recent birthday.

"They had a big surprise party for me. It was like 50 people here," shared Muraski. "I like pizza, so the whole counter was filled with pizza."

Life Time is also where Muraski thrives physically.

He places a strong emphasis on maintaining his health.

"I take no meds. I see the doctor once a year," he explained. "He’s looking. They’re trying to find something. They can’t find anything."

Equally crucial is the positive outlook he carries into each day, even through difficult moments.

People can learn from his example.

"I call it self-actualization," said Muraski. "The final stage in life is where nothing bothers you."

Family is a source of both strength and happiness for Muraski as well.

They always lift his spirits.

"I have a huge family in Chicago. I have two teenage grandsons that live here in Carver," concluded Muraski. "I have pickleball. I have my friends. I have a very enviable life. Loved by everyone."
