Thomas Wilson reflects on faith journey: 'What we’ve gone through has brought our entire family closer together'
One of his life’s greatest blessings for Thomas Wilson is becoming a dad.
While he can't play pickleball right now because of a rare autoimmune disorder, he's thoroughly enjoying spending time with his wife, Brittany, and his two daughters, Holyn and Haven.
“There’s like 17,000 things I love about being a dad. Just being called 'Dada' every single day when I come home is amazing. My oldest, Holyn, just turned two, so she’s talking now. When I come home and she runs to me saying ‘Daddy home!’ it’s like Christmas morning,” said Wilson. “She melts my heart all day, every day. It’s literally the most unbelievable thing I’ve ever experienced.”
Wilson has also shared that he’s a man of strong faith.
Having two adopted daughters has become a moving reminder of God’s love right in his own home.
“We adopted both of our girls, like how when you’re a believer, you’re adopted into God’s family. The way we feel about our daughters is not that they’re not ours. Instead, they’re full blood in our minds and hearts. They’re our family,” explained Wilson. “The amount of love we feel for them, it almost hurts. But, it hurts in this amazing way because you love them so much. It gives us the amazing perspective of just how much Christ loves us.”
With all the travel in professional pickleball and his constantly changing schedule, what does Wilson’s daily routine actually look like? Does he include a devotional each day?
“I’m not a big routine guy. I think for me it’s more of a constant state of talking to the Lord. My wife and I will do Bible studies together and have quiet time when we can,” mentioned Wilson. “We have a two-year old and a six-month-old. Our days are busy, and we try to carve out quiet time when we can.”
Wilson also shared a sweet anecdote about Holyn.
“Right before we eat or before she goes to bed, she says ‘Pray?’ and she grabs everyone’s hands,” he recounted. ”We’re always praying and talking about the Lord, so it’s essential to her.”
Wilson’s journey has been difficult in recent years, but those challenges have deepened his understanding of the Gospel.
“When things happen, whether it’s health or other challenges like our fertility, you kind of start to have doubts and wonder ‘Why is this happening to me?’ But, when we’re weak, he’s strong, so we have to look at it from that perspective It’s not always easy, especially when things are really hard, but having my wife to continue to encourage me, to keep my walk strong with the Lord, that’s helped me a ton,” he insisted.
“We’ve been through so many things, and if we pause and look back, it’s almost unbelievable. We take it day by day and know that He has sustained us and will continue to do so. What we’ve gone through has brought our entire family closer together through the hardship, and I’m just extremely grateful,” he added.
Wilson revealed that his favorite book of the Bible is Job.
“It’s a little harsh, but Job is really interesting. I think a lot of people’s view of Christianity is like ‘If I become a Christian, my life is going to be amazing and the Lord is going to make me happy,’ but it has nothing to do with our happiness. It’s about Him living through us,” he said.
“Over the last few years, I think about Job all the time. The stuff he went through is 1,000 times worse than what I’m going through, and a lot of people don’t see that viewpoint. Look at the New Testament, the disciples and apostles were martyred. It’s not a fun, happy idea of Christianity. God loves us, but there’s also a call to fully surrender to Him and live holy. It’s not always an easy road,” he continued.
Despite the hardships, Wilson’s faith remains strong, supported by his family, friends, and community—including fellow pickleball pros.
“I live in the same city as Vivienne David and the Johnson twins, so we’re fortunate to have that core group of believers around,” he concluded.
