Manage Courts for Your Pickleball Tournament
How to Manage Courts for Your Tournament Schedule
Court management plays a critical role in the success of any pickleball tournament. Whether you’re coordinating around maintenance issues, ensuring accessibility for all players, or assigning specific brackets to certain courts, having a clear strategy can make tournament day run far more smoothly.
Using the right court management tools within your tournament software helps you optimize scheduling, reduce confusion, and improve the experience for players, referees, and tournament staff. Here’s a step-by-step guide to managing your courts effectively.
1. Set Up Your Courts
Start by navigating to Manage Location Courts in your tournament dashboard. This is where you will enter the total number of courts available for your tournament.
After entering the number of courts, click Add Courts to create them in the system.
You can then customize your courts to match your facility layout.
• Reorder courts to match the physical layout of your venue
• Rename courts for clarity (examples: Court A, Center Court, Championship Court)
Organizing your courts this way helps tournament staff, players, and referees easily locate their assigned matches throughout the event.
2. Temporarily Exclude Courts
Sometimes courts may become unavailable due to maintenance, weather conditions, or other facility issues. Instead of deleting a court entirely, the better option is to temporarily exclude it.
To exclude a court:
• Select the court in your dashboard
• Choose the date and time it will be unavailable
The court will appear grayed out with a blue indicator, signaling that it is temporarily unavailable.
This feature allows you to quickly re-enable the court later if conditions improve, giving you flexibility for last-minute adjustments.
3. Designate Wheelchair-Accessible Courts
If your tournament includes wheelchair divisions, it’s important to designate which courts are accessible.
Marking wheelchair-accessible courts ensures:
• Proper scheduling for wheelchair brackets
• Compliance with accessibility needs
• A better experience for players who require specific court accommodations
Taking this step supports inclusivity and helps avoid scheduling conflicts on tournament day.
4. Assign Brackets to Specific Courts
Some brackets may need to be played on specific courts. This could be due to court quality, spectator viewing, livestreaming needs, or skill-level considerations.
To assign brackets to certain courts:
• Go to Manage Location Court Counts and Start Times
• Uncheck all courts first
• Select only the courts you want that bracket to use
For example:
• A 4.0 Women’s Doubles bracket might only use Courts 14, 16, and 17.
This level of control helps tournament directors organize play more effectively and maintain a higher level of consistency for competitive divisions.
5. Exclude Courts from Specific Brackets
Sometimes a court may still be playable but not ideal for higher-level competition.
In this case, you can exclude that court from certain brackets while keeping it active for others.
Benefits of this approach include:
• Protecting high-level matches from poor court conditions
• Maintaining fairness across competitive divisions
• Preventing delays or complaints during key matches
Lower-level divisions can continue using the court while higher divisions remain on your best courts.
6. Simulate and Fine-Tune Your Schedule
After assigning courts and brackets, the next step is to use the Tournament Simulator.
The simulator allows you to preview how your settings will affect the tournament schedule.
Start by clicking Save This Day to lock in your court assignments and bracket settings.
Then review the proposed schedule and watch for potential issues.
Look for:
• Bottlenecks where too many matches are scheduled at once
• Gaps where courts are underutilized
• Opportunities to adjust start times for better flow
For example, delaying a bracket start time slightly may allow earlier matches to finish and free up courts.
Use this step to fine-tune your tournament schedule before match play begins.
7. Best Practices for Court Management
Following a few simple best practices can make a big difference in how smoothly your tournament runs.
• Save every change you make in the system
• Use court exclusion instead of deletion for greater flexibility
• Clearly communicate court assignments to staff and players
• Review training materials if you’re new to the simulator or court management tools
Preparation and communication are key to preventing confusion on tournament day.
Final Thoughts
Effective court management helps keep your tournament running on schedule while ensuring players and staff have a clear understanding of where matches are taking place.
By properly setting up your courts, assigning brackets strategically, and using the simulator to optimize scheduling, you can create a smooth and professional tournament experience.
