Five pickleball New Year’s resolutions
We’ve officially watched the ball drop and shared a celebratory kiss with our doubles partner.
Whether you spent your New Year’s Eve out on the town, at home, or on a pickleball court, I’d like to share five of my pickleball resolutions for 2025 because there’s no time like the present to start elevating my game.
1. Play more pickleball
I have to hit the court on a more regular basis. But life gets busy and I recently moved to a new city, so I’ve lost my usual group. I’m challenging myself to get out there, try out some new leagues, and be brave. Because honestly, the toughest part about it is just showing up.
So, I’m keeping myself accountable and making sure I play more.
2. Stretch
This is so critical. And it’s something I have been seriously dropping the ball on. I’m more than comfortable running through a dynamic warmup routine when I first get to the court. The adrenaline is high and I usually need to wait for a court anyway. But afterwards? I’ll admit it, I’m tired, ready to hit the showers, and move on with the rest of my day.
Then the next day, my body pays me back for it. I’m sore, a little tight, and feel like I need to go to the chiropractor. But that stops in 2025. I’m taking the time after I play pickleball to properly cool down, rest, recharge, and keep my body strong.
3. Hydrate
I swear I am always on the cusp of dehydration. I never drink enough water and that is no good. As someone who knows better, I’m officially calling it quits on not drinking enough water. I invested in a reusable water bottle to bring with me everywhere I go, so I can hydrate with ease. No more excuses. I’m buckling down this year.
4. Invite more people to play pickleball
I have so many friends off the court that have told me that they want to start playing. This year, I’m getting those friends on the court. I’ve got extra pickleball paddles that they can use, and I’m calling them and making a plan. No more talking – let’s take action.
I think we all can agree that playing or teaching pickleball to newbies can be no fun because they’re hitting balls into the net and scattering them all over the court. We don’t actually get to play the game.
But I think it’s good for seasoned players to practice self-control, grace, patience, and go back to basics to play with beginners. It’s a beneficial mental practice as well.
5. Drill, drill, drill
Everyone says that if you want to get better, you have to start drilling. I think it’s about time I stop strictly playing games and hit the court solely to drill. I have a drilling partner who’s my new roommate, so that means we’re going to start trying drills that the pros recommend. Maybe I’ll start with one of John Cincola’s drills and level up my game.
