My new dream summer vacation: Playing pickleball on a yacht
Spring break is in full swing for schools across the U.S., but I’m already looking ahead to summer. After Genie Bouchard discussed her hot girl summer, I decided to start planning my own.
At the top of my summer bucket list is playing pickleball on a yacht. Yes, it’s a thing.
Riley Palmer, known as Smiley Riley Pickleball on Instagram, is going viral for sharing her incredible charter yacht vacations featuring an inflatable court on the water. An Erne right into the ocean? That’s the best Erne I’ve ever seen.
In addition to the floating court, some trips also have skinny singles on the ship and others have a full court on the top deck.
In a recent interview with the brains behind the viral yacht operation, Palmer shared an example of what an itinerary generally looks like aboard these incredible excursions.
“For the Greece trip, you fly into Athens a day or two before the trip so you have time to explore. Then, we would take you to the boat and have a welcome dinner. Then, we go up the Corinth Canal,” she said. “When you wake up in the morning, the boat leaves port while you have breakfast. Then, it takes you to a swim stop, which is when you get to play pickleball, paddle board, all those fun things. Then, you eat lunch and go for another two hours, and once you get to your next stop, you’re there overnight.”
Palmer also explained that there are plenty of opportunities off the boat for vacationing pickleballers to explore the local islands, cuisine, and beaches. Her favorite activity is renting a bike and touring a city.
“I love bike tours, but you could do a wine tasting or a beach tour. Each place we stop, there’s a land tour with it. We even get to go to Olympia where the Olympics were created,” she said.
There's also a gym, Pilates instructor, chef, and massage therapist on the boat. It’s a full-on pickleball wellness getaway with one of the most beautiful backdrops in the world. Tell me that doesn’t sound like paradise.
“You get leisure time, play time, and beach time,” emphasized Palmer.
While Palmer is a certified pickleball coach, she’s also bringing along several notable instructors on these trips, including “Pickleball Coach to the Stars” and Pickleballtv broadcaster, Matt Manasse.
The folks lucky enough to go on these getaways are in good hands.
In addition to all that goodness, they also have fun. Palmer recalled some of her favorite moments from past adventures.
“I had a client from Phoenix and she is an absolute riot. We were sitting up on the top deck and she went up to the front of the boat and stood on it like Titanic-style. Her arms were out, and we were all just cracking up laughing because she’s such a kid at heart,” she concluded. “Pickleball allows us to feel alive and young, and we just have a lot of fun.”
