Washington State passes bill in favor of pickleball license plate

Pickleball was founded on Bainbridge Island, WA, so it’s no surprise that the state government is extremely proud of our beloved sport. On Wednesday, it was announced that drivers will be able to buy new specialized license plates that feature pickleball

Suddenly, I want to move to Washington.

The license plate is simply charming with its woodsy blue background and two criss-crossing paddles and pickleball design.

Drivers can purchase the plate for $40 beginning November 1, and $30 for renewals.

Pickleball became the official state sport in March 2022. Quickly after, the Seattle Metro Pickleball Association (SMPA) teamed up with Senator John Lovick to sponsor a specialized license plate with proceeds going to SMPA for construction and maintenance of pickleball courts.

Gov. Bob Ferguson signed Senate Bill 5444 into law this month issuing the pickleball plate.

With the approval of these license plates, it’s clear that state officials are investing in pickleball’s longevity as a popular recreational sport, with no anticipation of it being a passing fad. And proceeds go to a good cause, too.

The pickleball license plate is accompanied by several other specialized plates in which the proceeds go to their respective causes. The others include Mount St. Helens, Honey bees and pollinators, Keep Washington Evergreen, and Smokey Bear – all reflective of the active and outdoorsy culture in Washington. And now, pickleball is added to the list.

Now if only we could’ve gotten a crossover design with Smokey Bear playing pickleball, that would’ve been too fun. Maybe next year?
