Let’s be 'very demure, very mindful' on the pickleball court
If you’ve been browsing social media over the past few days, you've probably come across someone talking about being “very demure, very mindful” about something.
The trend originated from a viral TikTok video created by Jools Lebron that boasts more than 4.5 million likes and over 20,000 comments.
“You see how I do my makeup for work?” she asks. “Very demure, very mindful.”
The funny thing is, the video started as a PSA encouraging people to look professional, modest and reserved in the workplace or simply to dress appropriately for a job interview.
But now, the word “demure” has become the hottest catch phrase around.
We’re not here for a vocabulary lesson, though, right? We’re here to talk pickleball.
With that in mind, I started thinking: How could I be “very demure, very mindful” on the court?
Not very demure, definitely not mindful
To look at what’s demure, we must examine what isn't. Let’s start with gear.
While some paddles are eye-catching, others are on the verge of going way too far. Some paddles are so distracting that I can barely pay attention to the ball because the paddle face is staring me down.
That isn't demure, nor is it mindful. Instead, I’d say it’s the polar opposite.
Clothes are the primary focus of the demure versus undemure debate.
Showing up in colors that match the color of the pickleball – not demure and definitely not mindful. It doesn't just hurt my eyes, but it also makes it nearly impossible to play against because your opponent blends in with the ball itself.
Another example that’s undemure: wearing clothes that are too revealing like the Norma Kamali pickleball dress or guys playing shirtless and/or with shorty shorts. Not only are these things distracting for opponents, but they don't make sense for the player wearing them either. Not mindful at all.
Even shirts that say things like “Dear Tennis, thanks for the courts” could be seen as brazen if there are tennis players hanging around.
Bottom line, you want to avoid being too revealing - or wearing anything that might lead to a fight. It’s just that simple.
Very demure, very mindful
Being ”very demure, very mindful” on the court is easier than you’d think. You actually have to try harder to look brazen.
Girls, if you’re going for a demure look on the court, think about it like you’re going to play with your grandmother. Don’t wear booty shorts that have half your bottom falling out and a tight top with way too much skin showing.
And guys, maybe avoid going out there shirtless with shorts that are way too small or too tight. It’s not the 80s anymore. We don’t need to see that much leg!
If you’re out there seeking your future doubles partner for life, you can still look demure and get positive attention. Keep it classy, friends.
Being demure isn’t just about the outfits, makeup, and gear, however, it’s a state of mind. Don’t cause fights, don’t make bad line calls, and don’t be a jerk. The best thing about pickleball is the community element, and if you want to enjoy the incredible health and social benefits our beloved game has to offer, make an effort to showcase the high-quality character that will endear you to your fellow players.
This may seem like a silly TikTok trend, but being aware of your surroundings and shifting accordingly matters. Even on the court.
