3 things to watch for on Friday at PPA Cincinnati
The Veolia Cincinnati Showcase presented by Six Zero continues Friday with quarterfinal action in all five pro events.
Here is the order of play:
- The morning’s biggest news is that Parris Todd has withdrawn from women’s singles competition with an illness. The No. 4 seed was supposed to face her doubles partner Catherine Parenteau in the women’s singles quarterfinals, but now Parenteau will advance to the semifinals where she will face either Anna Leigh Waters or Judit Castillo on Saturday. As of this writing, Todd is still set to compete in women’s doubles later Friday afternoon, where she and Parenteau are scheduled to take on No. 12 seeds Brooke Buckner/Chao Yi Wang.
- In men’s singles, No. 2 seed Federico Staksrud and No. 57 seed Chris Haworth will face off for the first time in over a year. Haworth has won the last three meetings between the two, with the most recent being an 11-7, 0-11, 11-9 victory in the bronze medal match of the 2024 Kansas City Open. The new PPA signee Haworth will look to continue improving his ranking, while Staksrud will look to continue his quest for his first title since January.
- One of the stories of the week has been Milan Rane/Connor Garnett’s run in mixed doubles. The No. 21 seeds are through to the quarterfinals after consecutive wins over No. 15 seeds Callie Smith/Jay Devilliers and No. 3 seeds Catherine Parenteau/Christian Alshon. Rane/Garnett also made the quarterfinals last month in Bristol, so they will be looking to do one better on Friday when they face the ever-steady No. 7 seeds Jessie Irvine/Gabe Tardio.
