3 things to watch for on Friday at PPA Newport Beach

Now, let’s get into what to watch for.

  • Yates Johnson is into the quarterfinals for the first time since suffering a groin injury in 2024 that impacted him for nearly ten months. The No. 19 seed is riding tall after comfortable victories over Jaume Martinez Vich and Connor Mogle, and he will be looking to continue his run when he faces No. 2 seed Federico Staksrud with a spot in the semifinals on the line. This will be the fourth match of the day on Grandstand Court.

  • Sticking with men’s singles, Chris Haworth and Jack Sock are set to clash for the first time since their meeting in the final of the PPA Masters back in January. Haworth won that contest, but the real story was Sock suffering a hamstring injury that sidelined him for two tournaments. The 33-year-old appears to be back at full strength and will be out for revenge on Friday as he pursues his first career victory over Haworth. This will be the fourth contest on Humana Championship Court.

  • In mixed doubles, No. 4 seeds Alix Truong/Christian Alshon will take on No.5 seeds Parris Todd/Andrei Daescu in what projects to be one of the day’s most entertaining encounters. Truong/Alshon are playing together for the first time this week, but they have looked the part of a high seed through three matches. Things won’t be easy on Friday, however, as Todd/Daescu won some big matches to help the Columbus Sliders capture the MLP title in 2025 and seem to make deep runs whenever they play together at PPA Tour events. This will be the sixth match on Humana Championship Court.

Live broadcast coverage from the Tennis and Pickleball Club at Newport Beach will be available on Pickleballtv starting at 10am PT. I’ll be on the call with Greg Dow.
