3 things to watch for on Saturday at PPA Newport Beach
The SXY Newport Beach Open presented by JOOLA continues Saturday with semifinal action in all five pro events.
Here is the order of play:
Now, let’s get into what to watch for.
- Lea Jansen and Brooke Buckner will face off in women’s singles for the first time in 2026 after both players secured three-game victories on Friday. Jansen outlasted No. 2 seed Kate Fahey by a 6-11, 11-8, 14-12 score line in a wildly entertaining match that saw Jansen save four match points, while Buckner outdueled No. 22 seed Victoria DiMuzio 11-3, 7-11, 11-8 to make her second consecutive semifinal appearance. Jansen has won the last three contests in this head-to-head matchup, so Buckner will be looking to flip the script in the third match of the day.
- In mixed doubles, No. 10 seeds Tina Pisnik/Eric Oncins are fresh off a quarterfinal upset victory over No. 3 seeds Anna Bright/Hayden Patriquin. The former Texas Rancher teammates will now take on No. 2 seeds Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson with a trip to Championship Sunday on the line. The Johnson siblings are no strangers to winning in Southern California, as their first PPA title as a partnership came at this venue at the Newport Beach Shootout back in 2023. This will be the day’s sixth contest.
- And in men’s doubles, No. 18 seeds Len Yang/Collin Johns continued their Cinderella run on Friday with an 11-7, 2-11, 11-6 win over No. 3 seeds JW Johnson/CJ Klinger. Yang/Johns were down match points in their Round of 64 contest against No. 43 seeds Kailas Shekar/Riley Inn, but they have found a winning formula that now has them into the semifinals. No. 2 seeds Christian Alshon/Hayden Patriquin, who outdueled Eric Oncins/Dylan Frazier in a three-game epic on Friday, await in the penultimate match of the day.
Live broadcast coverage from the Tennis and Pickleball Club at Newport Beach will be available on Pickleballtv starting at 10am PT. I’ll be on the call for the first five matches with Greg Dow.
