3 things to watch for on Wednesday at PPA Atlanta

The Veolia Atlanta Pickleball Championships continue Wednesday with Round of 32 action in all five pro events.

This week’s event is a Slam worth 2,000 points and is the final opportunity for players to qualify for next week’s PPA Tour Finals.

Here is the order of play:

Now, let’s get into what to watch for.

  • Luca Mack should have no shortage of confidence after his 11-1, 11-7 victory over No. 17 seed Mohaned Alhouni on Tuesday. The No. 42 seed made the semifinals of last November’s Lakeland Open with notable wins over Tama Shimabukuro and Zane Ford and has six PPA Challenger medals to his name. Mack will look to make the final 16 in his home state when he faces No. 14 seed Jay Devilliers in the second match of the day on Showcase Court 2.

  • In mixed doubles, No. 16 seeds Danni-Elle Townsend/CJ Klinger will take on No. 19 seeds Jade Kawamoto/Dylan Frazier. Townsend/Klinger, who are expected to play together for the Columbus Sliders during this summer’s Major League Pickleball season, had a scare in the Round of 64 against Regina Goldberg/Nicolas Acevedo but came through with a three-game victory in their first match together. On the other side, Kawamoto/Frazier are playing together for the first time since October of 2025. This should be a highly competitive Round of 32 matchup and will be the day’s fifth contest on Showcase Court 4.

  • Staying in the mixed doubles draw, No. 43 seeds Sahra Dennehy/Tama Shimabukuro will take on No. 49 seeds Cailyn Campbell/Will MacKinnon after both teams pulled off upsets (by seeding) on Tuesday. Dennehy/Shimabukuro defeated No. 21 seeds Layne Sleeth/Riley Newman 11-3, 11-3 in what was Sleeth’s first match back from hip surgery. Campbell/MacKinnon followed suit and took down No. 15 seeds Kaitlyn Christian/Julian Arnold 11-5, 11-9 in one of the day’s biggest upsets. This match, which features three teenagers in Campbell (15), Shimabukuro (15), and MacKinnon (17), will be sixth on Showcase Court 6.
