3 things to watch for on Wednesday at PPA Lakeland
Main draw action from the Veolia Lakeland Open presented by Six Zero begins Wednesday with men’s and women’s singles.
Both draws will be played through the quarterfinal rounds.

Now, let’s get into what to watch for.
- Some major names withdrew ahead of the men’s singles competition, including Ben Johns and Jaume Martinez Vich. Both players were on Federico Staksrud‘s side of the draw, so their withdrawals could give the Argentine an easier path to the final as he pursues his third consecutive singles title. Another notable withdrawal came from Christian Alshon, the No. 4 seed this week. With Alshon out of contention, 14-year-old Tama Shimabukuro will advance to the Round of 16 after his earlier victory over Jemere Plummer.
- On the other half of the bracket, No. 2 seed Hunter Johnson could square off against No. 16 seed Jay Devilliers if both players make it that far. Devilliers has been consistently making deep runs during the second half of 2025 and actually won the most recent edition of this matchup at the wooden paddle tournament in Sacramento, but Johnson should be extra motivated to make a deep run this week as he attempts to regain the top men’s singles ranking from the aforementioned Staksrud.
- In the women’s singles draw, Seone Mendez should be playing with a lot of confidence after winning the Challenger Showdown in Dallas earlier this month to earn a PPA Tour contract. The former Australian tennis standout could face top-seeded Anna Leigh Waters in the Round of 32 as she seeks to make her mark on the PPA Tour.
Live broadcast coverage from Beerman Family Tennis Center begins at 11am ET on Pickleballtv.
