3 things to watch for on Wednesday at PPA Worlds
The Jenius Bank Pickleball World Championships continue Wednesday with Round of 32 action in all five pro events.
Here is the order of play:
Now, let’s get into what to watch for.
- For the second year in a row, former doubles partners JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier will face off in men’s singles at Brookhaven Country Club. Johnson won last year’s matchup in three games and has won six of the eight editions of this matchup, but Frazier is ranked considerably higher (No. 12 v. No. 24) and took men’s singles bronze earlier this year in Tucson. The winner of this matchup will advance to the Round of 16, where either No. 8 seed John Lucian Goins or No. 40 seed Augie Ge awaits.
- One of the most intriguing matchups of the day in the mixed doubles draw will be No. 10 seeds Etta Tuionetoa/Eric Oncins taking on No. 19 seeds Mari Humberg/CJ Klinger. Tuionetoa/Oncins aren’t too far removed from a quarterfinal run in Virginia Beach, and Tuionetoa took home silver in mixed with Christian Alshon at this event last year, so she could be primed for another deep run this week in North Texas. Not to be outdone, Humberg/Klinger made a run to the semifinals at the Orange County Cup back in June and have established a great rapport together, with Humberg thriving on the left and the lefty Klinger playing a big right side.
- And finally, the men’s doubles draw will give fans a must-watch matchup in the form of No. 11 seeds James Ignatowich/Augie Ge facing No. 17 seeds Jack Sock/Blaine Hovenier. In their only tournament together, Ignatowich/Ge made the final of the Pickleball Central Sacramento Vintage Open back in September, so they will be looking to replicate that success this week. For Sock/Hovenier, this week marks their first time playing together; both players have big serves, crush their thirds, and certainly bring the energy. Whoever advances to Thursday from this contest will have certainly earned their way there.
Live broadcast coverage from Brookhaven Country Club begins at 10am CT on Pickleballtv.
