Now, let’s get into what to watch for:

  • Look out for the women’s singles contest pitting No. 7 seed Chao Yi (Zoey) Wang against No. 38 seed Lacy Schneemann. Wang will be heavily favored based on seeding alone, but Schneemann has made deep singles runs in the past and has two PPA singles medals to her name. Despite this being only her third singles tournament since 2024, Schneemann has the goods to make this a highly competitive Round of 32 clash.

  • Not to be outdone, the men’s singles draw will give fans a battle between two PPA Tour veterans who have remained near the top of the sport through its near-constant evolution: Tyson McGuffin and Jay Devilliers. The two stars have a combined 53 PPA singles medals between them and have faced off in singles 13 times before this week, with 12 of those meetings occurring before 2023. A matchup that used to be reserved for Championship Sunday will happen in the Round of 32 in Palm Springs.

  • The match of the day projects to be the mixed doubles bout between No. 12 seeds Meghan Dizon/Eric Oncins and No. 18 seeds Rachel Rohrabacher/Will Howells. A matchup of this caliber would typically happen in the Round of 16 or even the quarterfinals, but Howells’ seeding suffers because he doesn’t have any prior ranking points with this being his first event as a contracted PPA Tour pro. Whichever first-time partnership advances to Thursday from this contest will certainly have earned their spot in the final 16.
