Alshon ousts Martinez Vich in three games (again) to make second straight singles final
Christian Alshon booked his spot in the men’s singles final with an 11-5, 2-11, 11-4 victory over No. 6 seed Jaume Martinez Vich in the first semifinal of the day in the Lone Star State.
The two had just faced off on Sunday in the final of Cape Coral, which Alshon won in three games to secure his first career PPA singles title.
Like Sunday’s triumph, Thursday’s win also came in three games.
After players split the opening two games, Alshon jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the deciding game as he applied near constant pressure at the kitchen line.
That run all but sealed the deal for the No. 7 seed.
Alshon spoke about how the experience of his most previous encounter against Martinez Vich helped him on Thursday.
“Before this match, I sat with my eyes closed for a few minutes and just tried to relive the match and all the shots I hit,” he explained. “It helped a lot because I was able to envision what was working, what wasn’t working, and what my strategy was after losing the first game last time. I took all of that into this match.”
Alshon will face either Federico Staksrud or Hunter Johnson on Sunday.
