Alshon overcomes Martinez Vich in three games for first career singles title
Christian Alshon collapsed into the kitchen on Humana Championship Court in a move reminiscent of Rafael Nadal’s celebrations when winning Grand Slam titles throughout his tennis career.
Though it’s two different guys in two different sports, Alshon’s elation is certainly justified: his first career singles title on the PPA Tour.
The 24-year-old got it done in the second match of Championship Sunday against No. 6 seed Jaume Martinez Vich, coming away with an 8-11, 11-3, 11-6 victory.
It was Martinez Vich who struck first, sprinting out to a 7-2 advantage in the opening game with some deep serves setting him up to hit third-shot winners past Alshon at the kitchen line.
But Alshon stormed back in Game 2 and began putting a lot more shape on his returns that made it difficult for Martinez Vich to get into a groove on serve.
That brought on the decider, where Alshon’s serve proved to be the difference. He jumped out to an 8-3 lead after four missed returns from Martinez Vich, a lead that would prove to be insurmountable as he earned the title after just under 50 minutes on court.
Alshon had previously played in three singles finals, coming away with only silver.
Now, he’s got the gold.
“I’ve been playing for a long time, and singles was the best event for me at first,” he shared. “The title eluded me for so long that it felt like I couldn’t win, but Florida is my home state, so it's awesome to win it here.”
Alshon will go for his second gold medal of the day later when he and Federico Staksrud take on Ben Johns/Andrei Daescu for the men’s doubles crown.
In the bronze medal match, 16-year-old qualifier John Lucian Goins defeated No. 38 seed Max Freeman 11-6, 9-11, 11-2 to secure his first career medal on the PPA Tour.
