Back-to-back: Alshon overpowers Staksrud for second straight men’s singles title
“This match is about returns, serves, and that first blast.”
That’s what Dave Fleming said during he and Michelle McMahon’s commentary of the men’s singles final at the CIBC Texas Open presented by Fasenra.
The match featured No. 7 seed Christian Alshon taking on top seed Federico Staksrud, with Alshon coming away with an 11-4, 11-7 victory.
Fleming’s characterization of the encounter was certainly accurate, as Alshon relied on huge serves to set him up to rip forehands on his third shots.
Staksrud did have a chance to potentially force a third game when he got up 7-5 in Game 2, but Alshon closed out the match on a six-point run to earn his second men’s singles title in as many weeks.
“It means a lot to win not just one but two [singles titles] after having several years of no golds in singles,” Alshon said after the fact. “It’s an awesome feeling, and I really feel like my singles game is coming along. People should be scared.”
No. 6 seed Jaume Martinez Vich took home the bronze medal after No. 4 seed Hunter Johnson retired from their match.
