Bouchard downs Johnson, advances to semifinal against Fahey
No. 11 Genie Bouchard made headlines in women's singles on Friday with an 11-5, 5-11, 13-11 quarterfinal victory over No. 14 Jorja Johnson at the Rate Vegas Cup presented by Holland America.
The Canadian overcame some major adversity in the final stanza, fighting off five match points before ultimately sealing the deal and earning a spot in the semifinals as a result.
Bouchard will face No. 2 Kate Fahey on Saturday.
The pair most recently clashed in the gold-medal match at the Pickleball Central Sacramento Vintage Open where Fahey came out on top.
"Genie's amazing. I always joke that her wingspan is like nine feet tall. You can't pass her at the net," praised Fahey earlier in the day after defeating No. 10 Judit Castillo in a three-game affair at Darling Tennis Center. "She gets to everything, so I bet it'll be another battle. I'm just looking forward to being in another semfinal here."
Speaking of that Fahey-Castillo quarterfinal duel, the winner was pushed to the limit.
Fahey dropped the opening frame 5-11, before securing 11-9 and 11-3 triumphs down the stretch to advance in the bracket.
"It was really tough. I think that might've been one of my favorite wins. Judit literally gave me everything she had. She's such a great competitor and athlete, and it really took everything I had and more. I'm just really proud of myself for sticking to it," said Fahey. "I was down in the second, and I wasn't sure what was going to happen there, but I honestly stuck to it."
The other women's semifinal will feature No. 1 Anna Leigh Waters against No. 3 Kaitlyn Christian.
