Bright, Rohrabacher remain steady, move past David, Jk. Kawamoto in two games

Anna Bright/Rachel Rohrabacher closed out Saturday’s action at the Lake Kennedy Racquet Center with an 11-2, 13-11 victory over No. 7 seeds Vivienne David/Jackie Kawamoto.

The No. 2 seeds cruised to a win in the opening game, thanks in large part to the offensive capabilities of Bright; she frequently found success attacking up the line at David.

But just like in the day’s first women’s doubles semifinal, Game 2 was not as straightforward.

David/Kawamoto jumped out to a 7-1 lead, as David began countering much more effectively and Kawamoto found success with aggressive roll dinks at the kitchen line.

Not deterred by the deficit, Bright/Rohrabacher came all the way back and saved a game point at 8-10 before eventually closing out the day’s final contest in two games.

“They definitely started raising their level a lot in the second set, and it took us a little bit to get going,” Rohrabacher said of the roller coaster that was Game 2. “We kind of changed our game plan a little bit when they started getting hot because it felt like Jackie was roping us around a little bit, so we had to put a stop to that.”

This result sets Bright/Rohrabacher up to face Anna Leigh Waters/Catherine Parenteau in a final for the fourth time this year.

Their most recent bout in Mesa went the distance, with Waters/Parenteau emerging victorious in five games.
