Buckner avenges Masters loss, beats Bouchard in three games
Brooke Buckner is into the women’s singles quarterfinals after a 7-11, 11-6, 11-7 victory over No. 12 seed Genie Bouchard.
Bouchard won their most recent meeting at the PPA Masters back in January, but Buckner flipped the script on Thursday after dropping the first game.
Though Buckner is most well-known for overpowering her opponents from the baseline, she used a more kitchen-centric game style to win Games 2 and 3.
“Genie’s playing well. She’s so long, so it’s hard to get the ball by her. I was really just telling myself to go into the net and make her pass me because it’s so hard to get the ball by her,” she told Pickleballtv’s Kamryn Blackwood and Matt Manasse after the match.
That adjustment helped the No. 5 seed capture the comeback victory after nearly an hour on court.
Buckner will be back in action later Thursday afternoon when she and her Las Vegas Night Owls teammate Chao Yi Wang face No. 5 seeds Etta Tuionetoa/Allyce Jones in women’s doubles.
As for singles, she will face her training partner and this week's No. 2 seed Kate Fahey in Friday’s quarterfinal round.
