Buckner, Shick into Round of 16 in Austin
LAKEWAY, TX - Mixed doubles day for Brooke Buckner and Collin Shick almost ended in their very first match.
They faced match point down 7-10 in the second game in their match against Liz Truluck and Brandon French.
Just a few hours later, they’re into the Round of 16 after upsetting No. 6 seeds Catherine Parenteau and Jack Sock.
The drive-and-crash strategy was on full display on Humana Championship Court, as Buckner and Collin Shick took an 11-6, 12-10 victory.
With Friday’s windy conditions, many teams have used that strategy to add to the unpredictability that the wind already brings.
And Buckner and Shick ran it to near perfection.
“If you’re going to drive and crash when the wind is into you, you can’t miss in the net; if you try and do it when the wind’s with you, you cannot miss long," explained Shick. "If you take those errors out of play, then I think it creates opportunities to be offensive and can put a lot more pressure on your opponents.”
Up next for the No. 26 seeds is a Round of 16 clash against No. 12 seeds Meghan Dizon and Gabriel Tardio.
