China's Long claims historic first at Panas Malaysia Open

The inaugural PPA Tour Asia stop has found its champions.

In one of the most dramatic matches of the tournament, China’s Yufei Long captured the first-ever PPA Tour Asia women’s singles title at the Panas Malaysia Open, saving two championship points in a dramatic 2-1 (3-11, 12-10, 11-5) final victory over Nicola Schoeman on Championship Sunday at 9Pickle in Kuala Lumpur.

The encounter was full of baseline battles, with both players pulling passing shots out of their pockets from seemingly nowhere. Long and Schoeman were pushed to their limits, chasing down every ball in pursuit of the title.

“It’s literally blood, sweat and tears in the final. Really emotional, pushing the limits, both me and my opponent,” said Long. “We both felt it, just pushing through Friday, Saturday and Sunday through the heat, through everything. It was really a good match. My opponent played really well and pushed me to play my best game. Really proud of this match. I feel like no matter the outcome, even if I had lost, I still would’ve been proud of it.”

On saving those championship points, Long revealed her simple approach.

“I knew the score, I thought, 'OK, maybe I will lose it, but let’s just try my best and fight until the end.' Turned out, I hit a few good shots and she hit a few mistakes, and I was able to grind through the second set.”

Not only did Long take home the gold, she also picked up 1,000 PPA Tour Asia ranking points to kick off the race to finish the year as the region’s number one.

In men’s singles, Vietnam’s Giang Trinh completed a remarkable run from qualifying to champion, denying India’s Vanshik Kapadia the Triple Crown in Sunday’s final 2-0 (12-10, 11-7).

Kapadia had already secured the men’s doubles title with Harsh Mehta and the mixed doubles crown alongside Schoeman, but fell just short at the final hurdle of his triple bid.

Women’s doubles saw Jamie Wei and USA’s Xiao Yi Wang-Beckvall defeat the newly formed partnership of Long and Korea’s Kwon Mihae, splitting the Orange County Cup duo of Long and Wei who had made headlines with their quarterfinal run on American courts.

PPA Tour Asia continues next month with the Hong Kong Open set to be held at Kai Tak Arena from August 21-24.
