Christian battles past local favorite Dalla-Bona for second title in three tournaments
Kaitlyn Christian continued her stellar start to the 2025 season with a 12-10, 11-8 victory over No. 12 seed Somer Dalla-Bona to claim the women’s singles title in Melbourne.
One of the biggest challenges for Christian, who looked to get up to the net early and often, was dealing with the world-class backhand of Dolla-Bona.
Not deterred by the precise passing shots of her opponent, Christian demonstrated her excellent movement and court coverage—especially at the kitchen line—and was frequently able to overpower the Australian star from the baseline.
After a tense second game, the top seed closed out the contest at the fifth time of asking to secure her second women’s singles title in her past three tournaments.
A former top-40 ranked women’s doubles player on the WTA Tour, Christian has a special relationship with the city of Melbourne.
“When I played tennis, I spent about two or three months out of the year here because this is where my training base was,” she mentioned. “It’s one of favorite cities in the world, so to get gold here means a lot to me.”
In the bronze medal match, No. 11 seed Andie Dikosavljevic defeated No. 13 seed Nicola Schoeman by an 11-7, 11-5 score line.
