First-time partners Rohrabacher, Alshon battle past Parenteau, Tardio in three games

In their first tournament together, Rachel Rohrabacher/Christian Alshon are into the mixed doubles semifinals after an 10-12, 11-6, 11-7 victory over No. 5 seeds Catherine Parenteau/Gabe Tardio.

The No. 4 seeds dropped the opening game after building a 9-4 lead, but they responded by winning the next two games to triumph in one of the most entertaining matches of the week so far.

Rohrabacher spoke afterwards about what it took to reset after a disappointing finish to Game 1.

“We felt that in a lot of the points we lost, we were doing the right things,” she said. “We felt that they were great points and that we were getting what we wanted, so we just had to trust that we would start executing, and we did.”

Rohrabacher was supposed to play most of the year with Will Howells but is partnering with Alshon this week and at next week’s event in Mesa, AZ while Howells recovers from an ankle injury.

It’s safe to say that the partnership is on a good track so far.

“Rachel and I had a really good dynamic this match,” Alshon mentioned. “I think we were very comfortable going into Game 2, and we showed that.”

Top seeds Anna Leigh Waters/Ben Johns, who defeated Mari Humberg/Augie Ge in straight games earlier in the day, await in Saturday’s semifinal round.
