Goins, Johnson to clash for men’s singles gold

John Lucian Goins and Hunter Johnson are through to the men’s singles final in Las Vegas after earning semifinal victories early Thursday evening.

Goins kicked off the day’s semifinal action with a 6-11, 11-3, 11-7 victory over No. 7 seed Jack Sock.

The No. 11 seed looked to be in trouble when he got down 0-6 in the deciding game, but he went on to close out the contest on an 11-1 run—thanks, in part, to Sock suffering from leg cramps—to advance his second straight final on the PPA Tour.

The 17-year-old spoke about what it means to be able to compete against the former face of American tennis in Sock, who he grew up watching.

“It’s a surreal feeling, honestly. It’s just so cool, and I’m grateful for pickleball that I have this opportunity to play against someone I watched on TV playing tennis growing up,” he said. “I mean, it’s just amazing.”

In the second semifinal, Johnson beat No. 3 seed Jaume Martinez Vich 11-5, 11-5 to advance to his fifth final of 2025.

The No. 2 seed was coming off a semifinal loss with the Los Angeles Mad Drops at last week’s Major League Pickleball finals, but he found his best on Thursday and advanced without dropping a game through four matches.

“I really tried to lock in and focus on my game,” he said of Thursday’s performances. “I like this Life Time ball; it suits my game a little bit more. I can kind of rip and create some spin. I’m locked in, focused on the rest of the week, and ready for Championship Sunday.”

Sunday will mark the second meeting between Goins and Johnson. Johnson won their lone matchup earlier this year at the Texas Open by an 11-6, 6-11, 12-10 score line and expects another tightly contested battle on Sunday.

“He’s a grinder, he’s lengthy, he’s long, and he hits the ball very well on pretty much all parts of the court,” he said of Goins. “I think it’s going to be a battle. I’m gonna have to create a gameplan to beat him. He’s young, he’s focused, and it’s nice to see a fresh face on Championship Sunday.”

Sock and Martinez Vich will face off for bronze, also on Sunday.
