H. Johnson outduels Sock in three games to capture men’s singles title
Hunter Johnson earned his second gold medal of 2025 with an 11-4, 8-11, 11-7 victory over No. 7 seed Jack Sock in the fourth match of the day on Humana Championship Court.
After players split the opening two games, Johnson got out to a 6-2 lead in the decider and seemed to be in full control.
On the side switch, however, Sock caught fire and rattled off five in a row to give himself a one-point advantage.
That brought Sock within just four points of his first PPA singles title, but it wasn’t meant to be for the Olympian.
Johnson would go on to score the contest’s final four points—taking advantage of several missed returns from Sock—to close out the encounter after just over an hour on court.
This is Johnson’s fifth singles title since September of 2024, and he has skyrocketed up to No. 2 in the PPA rankings since that initial triumph.
But the former SMU tennis standout says that he’s not worried about the accolades.
“I try not to look at it in terms of the numbers,” he explained. “I try to take it week by week and just learn and enjoy the process. I knew Jack was playing well out here all week, and I knew his forehand was gonna do some damage, and for a while there it was. Luckily, I was able to get some big serves at the end there, and it paid off.”
In the bronze medal match, Connor Garnett defeated Quang Duong by an 11-7, 11-5 score line.
