Hangzhou Thursday Recap: Ly stuns top seed Staksrud in men’s singles
PPA Tour Asia’s Hangzhou Open continued Thursday evening with semifinal action in all five pro divisions.
The day’s biggest result came from the men’s singles draw, where Hoang Nam Ly defeated top seed Federico Saksrud 11-7, 12-10 for the biggest win of his career.
Ly will take on No. 2 seed Hong kit “Jack” Wong in the final.
Despite the loss in his first match of the day, Staksrud was able to rebound later on with three-game victories in both men’s doubles and mixed doubles alongside Armaan Bhatia and Alix Truong, respectively.
He and Bhatia’s 11-5, 5-11, 11-9 victory over Thomas Yu/Len Yang was especially entertaining and featured several high-octane hands battles at the kitchen line.
On the women’s side, Chao Yi “Zoey” Wang and Alix Truong each advanced to two gold medal matches.
Wang beat Yufei Long to make the women’s singles final, while Truong/Staksrud beat Ting Chieh “Jamie” Wei/Connor Garnett 11-5, 4-11, 11-6 to advance to the mixed doubles final.
Wang/Truong also teamed up in women’s doubles, where they beat Sahra Dennehy/Yufei Long by an 11-4, 7-11, 11-6 score line to set a gold medal clash against Sarah Burr/Jamie Haas.
