Haworth, Alshon to clash for men’s singles crown
Chris Haworth and Christian Alshon are through to the men’s singles final in Virginia Beach after thrilling semifinal victories Saturday morning.
Haworth took down No. 6 seed Jack Sock 11-4, 11-13, 13-11 in a back-and-forth encounter that lasted well over an hour.
Sock caught fire with his forehand and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the decider, but Haworth was able to claw all the way back and save two match points before eventually securing the triumph by relentlessly targeting Sock’s backhand on serves and approach shots.
Haworth says this win is especially meaningful because he had struggled in semifinals at the last few PPA Tour events in Cincinnati and Sacramento.
“I’ve lost in the semifinals at the last two tournaments, and I felt like mentally I wasn’t there,” he mentioned. “That was my main focus today, to stay mentally locked in the whole match. I thought I did a good job.”
The No. 15 seed is now just one win away from earning his first PPA Tour title since the 2024 Orange County Cup.
Standing in his way will be Christian Alshon, who outdueled No. 5 seed Jaume Martinez Vich 4-11, 11-5, 12-10 in the other semifinal.
The No. 4 seed faced match point at 7-10 in the deciding game, but he stayed alive and went on to score five straight points on a single side out to steal the win.
Alshon has captured men’s singles gold in his last two tournaments in Cincinnati and Malaysia and will be looking to make it three in a row on Sunday when he and Haworth face off for the very first time.
