Johns, Tardio stay atop men’s doubles field as Waters claims Triple Crown No. 41

The weekend’s action in Newport Beach ended with gold medal matches in women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and women’s singles being played on Humana Championship Court in front of an at-capacity crowd.

Anna Leigh Waters, Anna Bright, Ben Johns, and Gabe Tardio were the big winners Sunday afternoon as the curtain closed in Southern California.

In the women’s doubles final, Waters/Bright continued their winning ways with an 11-4, 11-5, 11-3 victory over No. 3 seeds Parris Todd/Rachel Rohrabacher.

It was an incredibly high-level encounter from all sides, aided by the warm weather that slowed the ball down and allowed for extended rallies.

“I honestly felt like we were having a lot of firefights that were lasting a long time,” Waters mentioned afterwards. “I think this is some of the hottest weather we’ve played in a while, and I felt like we were having some really fun points because of it.”

In the day’s penultimate contest, Johns/Tardio continued their still-perfect 2026 campaign with an 11-6, 11-2, 3-11, 11-8 victory over No. 2 seeds Hayden Patriquin/Christian Alshon.

Johns gave some insight into what it took for him and Tardio to triumph in the many fast-paced hands battles that took place at the kitchen line.

“I think it’s a combination of things. I feel like it’s some pattern recognition, to where if you speed up in a certain pot, you’re looking for it in the next spot. It looks really fast, but it’s more about anticipating where the ball’s likely to go in the next shot,” he explained. “When you’re wrong, you get burned, but mostly it follows pretty good patterns.”

To close out the weekend, Waters returned to the court for the women’s singles final with a chance earn her 60th career singles title and 41st Triple Crown on the PPA Tour.

The 19-year-old superstar did just that, dispatching No. 5 seed Lea Jansen 11-2, 11-1 in a dominant performance.

Waters spoke afterwards about how she remains positive on the court from match to match.

“When you’re playing a match, there are a lot of ways that things can go negatively,” she noted. “Obviously, you’re not going to win every single point, and if you just keep being down on yourself, your brain starts to believe what you’re saying or thinking, so I like to trick myself as best as I can if I miss a shot or do something stupid. I’ll tell myself, ‘Good idea,’ or ‘Keep going for it.’”

Waters and other top pros will be back in action in just a few days with main draw action at the Veolia Texas Open set to begin on Tuesday.
