Johnson, Black outduel Todd, Parenteau for women’s doubles gold
Jorja Johnson/Tyra Black struck gold for the second time this season with an 11-7, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9 victory over No. 2 seeds Parris Todd/Catherine Parenteau in the women’s doubles final.
The No. 3 seeds trailed 5-7 in the opening game, but they then went on a 16-point run to take Game 1 and earn a 10-0 lead in Game 2 that helped them take control of the encounter.
Despite impressive resilience from Todd/Parenteau to take the third game, Johnson/Black held their collective nerve to close out the contest in Game 4 at the fifth time of asking.
Black, who competed in the mixed doubles final with Hayden Patriquin in Sunday’s first match, reflected on a challenging week filled with long days and hard-fought matches.
“I’m so tired from this very long few days, but we have some amazing fans out here pumping us up and keeping us going, so that was amazing,” she said. “I just had to stay aggressive out there and keep playing.”
The Dallas Flash teammates came into this matchup just one day removed from handing Anna Leigh Waters/Anna Bright their first-ever loss together in the semifinals, but they were motivated to not let Saturday’s win impact Sunday’s performance.
“Winning that match felt good, but we knew that the job wasn’t done,” Johnson mentioned. “We had to stay focused for today.”
That’s exactly what they did to secure their first title together since April's North Carolina Open.
In the bronze medal match, Waters/Bright defeated No. 4 seeds Etta Tuionetoa/Lacy Schneemann by an 11-8, 11-2 score line.
