Joseph secures comeback victory over Sock to reach quarters
ROSEVILLE, CA - Gabriel Joseph is into the quarterfinals at the Veolia Sacramento Open presented by Best Day Brewing after a 3-11, 11-8, 11-5 victory over Jack Sock.
Things weren’t looking good for the No. 10 seed as he found himself down a game and 1-5, but he worked his way all the way back into Game 2 using his trademark speed to extend rallies and painting lines with his two-handed backhand.
That momentum continued into Game 3, as Joseph jumped out to an 8-1 lead that was never threatened despite a late run from Sock.
With the win, Joseph advances to the quarterfinals where he will face No. 1 seed Federico Staksrud.
“I’m just gonna go out there and compete and play my game,” he said of his game plan going into the next round. “Obviously, I know what [Staksrud] brings to the table, but in singles anybody can get got. It’s a game of runs, and a lot of things can happen in a very short amount of time.”
The two have yet to face off this year, but Joseph won their most recent encounter in the final of the 2023 Takeya Showcase 11-6, 12-10.
He’ll look to have similar success later on Thursday.
