Late run lifts Ge over Goldin in three games

Augie Ge is into the men’s singles Round of 32 in North Texas after an 11-7, 5-11, 11-9 victory over No. 26 seed Grayson Goldin.

The Arizona lefty trailed 2-9 in the deciding game, but he didn’t surrender another point from that point on as he found particular success attacking the Goldin backhand.

That helped the No. 40 seed secure the win after just over an hour on court.

Ge is more known for his prowess on the doubles court and doesn’t play singles at every tournament, but he has now picked up wins over Donald Young and Goldin—two strong singles players themselves—at back-to-back tournaments.

The 29-year-old attributes his recent success to adding cardio into his fitness routine.

“I’ve been doing a little more cardio lately, some Zone 2 basic running which I don’t like, but you’ve gotta do it. I think that’s helped my fitness base a lot, and that’s helped me really believe as I get deeper into matches,” he said afterwards.

Ge will be back in action later Tuesday afternoon when he and fellow lefty Jade Kawamoto team up in mixed doubles, and he will face No.8 seed John Lucian Goins in Wednesday’s men’s singles Round of 32.
