Life on the edge: Black, Frazier save three match points to make quarters
ROSEVILLE, CA - Hurricane Tyra Black and Dylan Frazier are into the mixed doubles quarterfinals at the Veolia Sacramento Open presented by Best Day Brewing after a 9-11, 12-10, 11-5 victory over Lea Jansen and Hayden Patriquin.
It looked like Jansen and Patriquin would close out the match in Game 2 when they had leads of 5-1 and 10-7, but Black and Frazier stuck to a patient brand of pickleball on their way to saving three match points to force Game 3.
“[Jansen and Patriquin] were playing really well to get ahead in the second, so we just tried to stay solid and not give them any freebies to end the match,” Frazier shared. “Tyra played super steady the whole time, so it was nice to trust her to go crosscourt consistently and then set me up for some aggressive shots.”
The No. 9 seeds maintained that momentum throughout the entirety of the third game and closed it out 11-5 to book their spot in the quarterfinals.
This is the second come-from-behind victory of the day for Black and Frazier, as they trailed Susannah Barr and Connor Garnett 4-9 in Game 3 of their opening match before pulling it out 11-9.
They’ll look to avoid having to overcome any more deficits in their quarterfinal matchup against No. 2 seeds Anna Bright and James Ignatowich.
