2:30 p.m. ET: Black Bears avenge DreamBreaker loss, defeat Smash for first win

The last DreamBreaker the California Black Bears took part in was one of the more memorable ones of the season, but not for a reason they’re proud of.

That came on Friday when they blew a 20-11 lead to the Atlanta Bouncers.

A chance for redemption presented itself for the Black Bears when they went 2-2 against the Florida Smash through four doubles games on Sunday afternoon.

California didn’t let the opportunity go to waste.

Chris Haworth, who is competing in his first MLP event after getting picked up by California during Waiver Period 2, played a crucial role in the Black Bears’ triumph; he outscored Donald Young 10-4 and won the final point to give California a 26-24 victory.

Haworth was happy that the week’s first DreamBreaker ended differently than the second.

“We lost one DreamBreaker on Friday, which was tough because I know I’m known for my singles, so I felt like I kind of let the team down there,” he said. “Getting past that point in this one felt really good.”

The Black Bears will look for their second win of the weekend when they face the Miami Pickleball Club in the final match on Championship Court.

12:30 p.m. ET: Miami outlasts Atlanta for third straight win

The Miami Pickleball Club narrowly avoided a monumental collapse against the Atlanta Bouncers with a DreamBreaker victory.

The south Florida squad jumped out to a 2-0 lead, thanks to gender doubles wins from the pairings of Milan Rane and Bobbi Oshiro and Noe Khlif and Eric Oncins.

Atlanta responded, though, with mixed doubles wins from the pairings of Jaume Martinez Vich and Susannah Barr and Todd Fought and Emily Cederquist to extend the match.

Khlif and Oncins were the difference-makers for Miami in that deciding contest. Khlif outscored Martinez Vich 8-4 through three rotations, while Oncins outdueled Fought 8-2 and scored the winning point to help Miami prevail by a 21-17 score line.

“I think the whole team was a little disappointed that we ended up in a DreamBreaker, but I think we did a great job of turning it around and getting back into it mentally,” Khlif said of the effort. “I have a lot of confidence in my singles game, and Eric’s been playing good singles, too. We really just wanted to help the team as much as we could.”

Miami improves to 3-2 in Virginia Beach with the win, and the team will finish the event with a match against the California Black Bears later Sunday afternoon.

10:10 a.m. ET: Frisco ends skid with victory over Las Vegas as Night Owls drop fourth straight

The Frisco Pandas are back in the win column after a 3-1 victory over the Las Vegas Night Owls.

They had lost their previous four matches after winning their opening match in Virginia Beach, but 2-0 performances from Michael Loyd (filling in for the injured John Cincola) and Stefan Auvergne helped them get back on track.

On the other side of the net, the Night Owls are enduring their own struggles; they’ve dropped their last four matches after starting off 2-0 in Virginia Beach.

Both teams will look for a victory in their final matches on Sunday, with Frisco taking on the SoCal Hard Eights and Las Vegas facing the Bay Area Breakers.
