The other semifinal matchup features #2 seeds Todd/Rohrabacher against #4 seeds Jones/Tuionetoa.
5:20pm MT: Men's doubles semifinals promise to be entertaining
The top four tandems on the men's side punched their respective tickets to Semifinal Saturday.
#1 seeds Staksrud/Patriquin face #4 seeds JW Johnson/Klinger.
#2 seeds Alshon/Daescu battle #3 seeds Bar/Frazier.
4:45pm MT: Stage almost set for women's semifinals on Saturday
#1 seeds Waters/Parenteau will soon battle #6 seeds Kawamoto/David to determine the final spot available in the women's doubles semis in Utah.
The winner of that match will face #15 seeds Christian/Gecheva following their upset victory over #9 seeds Brascia/Brascia in the quarters 11-9, 11-8.
The other semifinal matchup features #2 seeds Todd/Rohrabacher against #4 seeds Jones/Tuionetoa.
3:45pm MT: Bar and Frazier serving up looks and wins on CC
#3 seeds Bar/Frazier had a tight battle against Devilliers/Tellez, who were playing well to start and had some chances in game one. However, a few unforced errors allowed Bar/Frazier to take the first, giving them all the momentum and a speedy win in the second: 12-10, 11-1.
More importantly, Bar/Frazier had a fashion statement to make in their quarterfinal. Both took the court to warm-up in "The Big D's" tshirts that were impossible to miss.
The tshirts are a reference to the nickname that both men share. Dekel Bar was given the moniker of "Big D" a few years back, while Dylan Frazier was upgraded to "Big D" by Anna Bright in a live interview after a win together.
3:15pm MT: First semifinal match-up confirmed
Patriquin/Staksrud look unstoppable as they book their spot in the semifinals after a QF win against Wright/Vich 11-9, 11-9.
While Vich is a dangerous player, and Wright definitely still has some of the best hands in the game, there was no slowing down the number one seeds today.
Meanwhile, on Grandstand, the young guns J. Johnson and Klinger barrel through their quarterfinal opponents, Newman/Ge, 11-5, 11-0. This team has talent, as well as experience on the side of Johnson and fire on the side of Klinger, not to mention Klinger's lefty advantage in the middle. It will be interesting to see what they can do against Staksrud/Patriquin tomorrow on Semifinal Saturday.
3:00pm MT: Women's quarterfinal match-ups are set
The top seeds Waters/Parenteau took down Team Genie Squared on CC to get here and will play against a team with some of the best defensive magic in the game in their QF. Meanwhile, the only two upsets in the round of 16 will be playing each other for a chance to compete on Semifinal Saturday: Christian/Gecheva and Brascia/Brascia. Brascia/Brascia defeated #8 seeds Callie Smith/Lindsey Newman in the R16.
#1 Anna Leigh Waters/Catherine Parenteau vs. #6 Jk. Kawamoto/David
#15 Christian/Gecheva vs. #9 Brascia/Brascia
#2 Rachel Rohrabacher/Parris Todd vs. #5 Lea Jansen/Lucy Kovalova
#4 Etta Tuionetoa/Allyce Jones vs. #7 Mari Humberg/Meghan Dizon
With an enthusiastic local crowd in Red Rock, QF #4 should be a fun one, since 3 of the 4 pros in that match-up live in Utah: Tuionetoa, Jones, and Dizon.
2:15pm MT: Men's doubs stay perfect with not a single upset logged in R16
Seeding was downright perfect for the men doubles division today and our quarterfinalists are officially set:
#1 Patriquin/Staksrud vs. #5 Vich/Wright
#4 J. Johnson/Klinger vs. #7 Newman/Ge
#2 Daescu/Alshon vs. #8 H. Johnson/Duong
#3 Bar/Frazier vs. #6 Devilliers/Tellez
What a line-up, folks.
1:45pm MT: UPSET ALERT in women's doubles
Surprise upset in women's doubles as #15 seeds Kaitlyn Christian and Christa Gecheva log a massive and resounding win in the round of 16 against #3 seeds and MLP teammates Jorja Johnson and Tyra Black: 11-5, 11-8.
"I think we stuck together really well as a team, we tried to carry each other with positivity and tried to be aggressive on thirds and force as we can and just take it to them," Christian said following the match.
Gecheva also responded, saying, "I would also say that we had a game plan going into it, and we stuck to the game plan and then we had like a couple minor adjustments which we were able to be clear minded enough to recognize and adjust in the moment which is usually a pretty hard thing to do against a top team like that."
"In terms of what made the difference out there - Kaitlyn's drive. Unreal insane. Girl hits the sh** out of the ball. Jack Sock, she's coming for you."
The two will see either #8 seeds Callie Smith/Lindsey Newman or #9 seeds Brascia/Brascia in their quarterfinal.
1:30pm MT: Lefty vs. lefty battle
One of the most interesting match-ups of the day came in the round of 16 with #11 seeds James Ignatowich/Max Freeman vs. #7 seeds Newman/Ge, where the two lefties, Freeman and Ge, faced off against each other. The match featured some high-level hands-battles, as well as some issues on both sides with unwinding the stack, due to the necessity of getting both lefties to their preferred sides.
At 26-years-old, Freeman is a newcomer to the pro circuit and only went full-time about a year ago. Freeman and Ignatowich were childhood friends who played tennis against each other in New England, and Ignatowich was the one who introduced Freeman to pickleball.
1:00pm MT: Men's doubles quarterfinals get closer to being set
#1 seeds Staksrud/Patriquin and #5 seeds Vich/Wright are the first to lock up their spots in the quarterfinal, where they will go head-to-head.
On the other side of the draw, #3 seeds Bar/Frazier and #6 seeds Devilliers/Tellez sail through their rounds of 16 and will face off against each other in the quarterfinals.
#4 seeds Klinger and H. Johnson are through as well, defeating Patrick Smith and Blaine Hovenier 11-2, 11-2. Similarly, #2 seeds Daescu/Alshon have yet to be pushed, taking down Craig Johnson and Pesa Teoni 11-2, 11-6 and landing in a quarterfinal of their own.
12:20pm MT: Round of 32 all chalk, #1 seeds pushed in Round of 16
AJ Koller and Utah-native Spencer Smith take game one against Staksrud/Patriquin all the way to 9-9 with some tight points and chances, but Staksrud/Patriquin close 11-9. They compete the match by taking game two as well 11-4.
No upsets logged as every single top seed advances in the men's doubles round of 32.
12:15pm MT: No main draw wins for Sherry/Querrey but a win in our hearts
Although Ryan Sherry/Sam Querrey get knocked out in the round of 32 by #8 seeds Hunter Johnson/Quang Duong 11-0, 11-2, they get some laughs thanks to their protective eyeglasses (what a fashion statement!) and the commentary of Querrey's ex-pro-tennis colleague, Jack Sock, as he watched the match.
11:45am MT: Women's doubles main draw kicks off play
Sisters and #9 seeds Maggie and Mary Brascia are the first to finish their round of 32 with an 11-3, 11-3 win over qualifiers Allie Davis and Bryanna Ojeda.
"Genie squared" (#13 seeds Genie Bouchard and Genie Erokina) defeat Hannah Blatt and Lingwei Kong in their round of 32 after getting pickled in the first game, with a final score of 0-11, 11-3, 11-9.
Layne Sleeth and Lina Padegimaite pull out of women's doubles, and Sleeth heads to the ER, cause unknown. Sending well wishes to her, whatever the issue may be. <3
#1 seed Anna Leigh Waters (playing alongside Catherine Parenteau) kicks the day off with a post showcasing her "morning routine."
11:20am MT: Number one seeds log a double pickle
Staksrud/Patriquin polish off Luke Ness and Andre Mercado in the round of 32 in just 15 minutes: 11-0, 11-0.
10:45am MT: Interesting partnerships in men's doubles giving eyebrow raises
First off, we've got Julian Arnold and Rafa Hewett playing together as the #10 seeds which is likely to result in some resounding "andiamos" and "round em ups!" that should keep fans engaged today. The duo won their round of 32 and now will face off against another fun pairing, Jay Devilliers and Pablo Tellez. Devilliers is set to play most of 2025 with old-time partner Pat Smith, but is shaking it up this week with Tellez.
Another exciting duo playing together today are #3 seeds Dekel Bar and Dylan Frazier. I like this team. There's good balance here in both personality and game style. I've also got my eye on the partnership between #5 seeds Matt Wright and Jaume Martinez Vich. Vich has improved tremendously and is poised for some big time results in the near future - maybe beside Wright the savvy veteran today. They're already through their round of 32 with a thundering win 11-6, 11-1 over John Lucian Goins and Spartak Rahachou.
Other pairings of note include Hunter Johnson/Quang Duong, Riley Newman/Augie Ge, and CJ Klinger/JW Johnson.
It remains to be seen whether any of the teams above will have what it takes to upset either the #1 seed (Federico Staksrud/Hayden Patriquin) or the #2 seed (Andrei Daescu/Christian Alshon), both of whom have been incredibly consistent and impressive in 2025.
Notable junior qualifiers who made it into the pro main draw of 32 are 15-year-old Andre Mercado and 15-year-old Ella Yeh.
