McGuffin, Martinez Vich oust top seeds Johnson, Frazier in two games
Tyson McGuffin and Jaume Martinez Vich closed out Semifinal Saturday in Atlanta with an impressive 11-6, 11-8 victory over top seeds JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier.
They will now have a shot at gold for the first time since April, but McGuffin admits that he and Martinez Vich didn’t come into the Georgia capital expecting to have this type of run.
“Jaume and I for the last month haven’t been playing well, so honestly we kind of had low expectations coming into this weekend,” he said. “But sometimes with low expectations comes good results because it took some pressure off of us.”
Coming into Atlanta, they had failed to reach the quarterfinals in two of their last four tournaments.
McGuffin’s prospects coming into this specific matchup weren’t exactly promising, either.
He entered Saturday’s contest with an 0-4 record against Johnson and Frazier this year, with all of those losses coming alongside Dekel Bar, his partner for the first half of the season.
Now, the tour veteran is 1-4 against the top-seeded tandem in 2024.
“Obviously, Dylan and JW are playing super well. They’re the best team in the world, but it’s a little different now that I’m playing with Jaume,” he explained. “It seems like Jaume has more offense off the bounce, whereas Dekel’s offense was mainly out of the air.”
Martinez Vich’s offensive capabilities were on full display, as he fearlessly—and successfully—sped up right at Frazier with his two-handed backhand in key moments to earn put away opportunities.
“I thought we just played our game” McGuffin said in summary. “Jaume tried to go through Dylan as much as possible, and I was just steady on the right.”
The No. 7 seeds will face No. 2 seeds Ben and Collin Johns in a rematch of the gold medal bout at the LA Open.
The Johns bros prevailed in five games there, so fans should expect another highly entertaining clash at Life Time Peachtree Corners.
