New Jersey rebounds from earlier loss, sweeps Brooklyn to win MLP New York
After seeing their 15-match winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Texas Ranchers on Sunday morning, the New Jersey 5s wasted no time getting back to their winning ways as they swept the Brooklyn Pickleball Team 3-0 to claim the Super Sunday Belt at MLP New York presented by Cleary Gottlieb.
Despite the earlier loss, the 5s still advanced to the #1 v. #1 matchup from Group A thanks to holding the tiebreaker in net game differential from their other matches.
That set them up to face Brooklyn, who won Group B with a DreamBreaker victory over the Dallas Flash earlier Sunday morning.
Anna Leigh Waters/Jorja Johnson kicked off the contest with an 11-1 victory over Jackie Kawamoto/Hannah Blatt in women’s doubles to remain undefeated as a partnership and improve to 22-0 on the season.
In men’s doubles, New Jersey’s Noe Khlif/Will Howells picked up one of their best wins of the season with an 11-8 triumph over Brooklyn’s Christian Alshon/Riley Newman.
Alshon/Newman had lost only one time on the season coming into Sunday’s clash, but Khlif/Howells came up big to give the 5s a lead that they wouldn’t lose.
From there, Waters and Khlif defeated Rachel Rohrabacher/Christian Alshon to seal the sweep and win their third consecutive event after also winning the events in Columbus, Ohio and Austin, Texas.
Khlif spoke afterwards about how he and Waters’ mixed doubles partnership has developed throughout the season.
“I know it took a little bit of time for us to get adjusted, but I feel like we’re meshing well right now,” he mentioned. “It’s a blast out here, and I’m just super proud of the whole team.”
With Sunday’s result and the 25 standings points that come with it, the 5s have officially leapfrogged the St. Louis Shock for the top spot in the standings and will hold the top seed at the Edward Jones MLP Mid-Season Tournament coming up in just under two weeks.
Despite a successful campaign thus far, Waters isn’t losing sight of the team’s true goal: the 2026 MLP championship.
“Obviously wins like this mean a lot, but we all know that nothing really matters until the playoffs,” she said. “I think we’re just trying to get a good seed right now and focus on building for the postseason.”
