Pool standings and latest storylines going into Day 3 of the PPA Finals
After 40 matches and limitless highlights, only one day of pool play remains at Toys “R” Us PPA Finals presented by JOOLA, taking place in San Clemente, CA.
Thursday’s action provided some notable upsets, as John Lucian Goins knocked off Hunter Johnson in men’s singles and Tina Pisnik/Lacy Schneemann notched their second win over Jorja Johnson/Tyra Black.
Pool play continues Friday at Life Time Rancho San Clemente, with live broadcast coverage beginning at 11am PT on Pickleballtv.
There are two massive developments out of Pool A in men’s singles: Jack Sock (0-2) has withdrawn with a hamstring injury, while Christian Alshon (1-1) has withdrawn with a hip injury.
Noe Khlif will play Sock’s final match against Chris Haworth, while Jaume Martinez Vich will play Alshon’s final pool play match against Connor Garnett. Alshon is still slated to compete in mixed doubles with Rachel Rohrabacher and men’s doubles with Hayden Patriquin later in the day.
As a reminder, the top two players or teams in each pool will advance to the semifinals taking place on Saturday.
Here is the order of play:
Here’s a look at the pool standings heading into Friday.
Women’s Singles
Pool A
- 1. Kate Fahey (2-0, PD: 32)
- 2. Lea Jansen (2-0, PD: 18)
- 3. Catherine Parenteau (0-2, PD: -23)
- 4. Liz Truluck (0-2: PD: -27)
BREAKDOWN: Fahey and Jansen will both advance to the semifinals and will face off on Friday for sole possession of the top seed in Pool A.
Pool B
- 1. Brooke Buckner (2-0, PD: 6)
- 2. Chao Yi Wang (1-1, PD: 1)
- 3. Kaitlyn Christian (1-1, PD: 0)
- 4. Judit Castillo (0-2, PD: -7)
BREAKDOWN: Wang kept this pool competitive with an 11-2, 6-11, 11-7 victory over Christian on Thursday. All four players still have a way to advance, but Buckner has the most control over her destiny because she will win the pool if she beats Christian on Friday. If she loses that match, she could lose her spot if both Christian and Wang have commanding victories and end with a better point differential (PD). For Castillo to advance, she would need to handily beat Wang (outscoring her by at least nine points) and hope for Buckner to beat Christian. In that case, Castillo would have the best PD out of the three players with 1-2 records.
Men's Singles
Pool A
- 1. Connor Garnett (2-0, PD: 13)
- 2. Chris Haworth (1-1, PD: 9)
- 3. Jaume Martinez Vich (replacing Christian Alshon) (1-1, PD: -13)
- 4. Noe Khlif (replacing Jack Sock) (0-2, PD: -9)
BREAKDOWN: Garnett is into the semifinals after wins over Haworth and Sock. Even if he loses to Martinez Vich on Friday, he is guaranteed to finish inside the top 2 with his point differential. If Haworth beats Khlif, he will advance to the semifinals. For Martinez Vich to advance, he would need to beat Garnett and hope that Haworth loses to Khlif.
Pool B
- 1. Federico Staksrud (2-0, PD: 8)
- 2. John Lucian Goins (1-1, PD: 5)
- 3. Hunter Johnson (1-1, PD: -1)
- 4. Roscoe Bellamy (0-2, PD: -12)
BREAKDOWN: Goins made things interesting in this pool with an 8-11, 11-7, 11-6 victory over Johnson on Thursday. All four players still have a shot at advancing, but Staksrud has the most control over his destiny and will win the pool if he beats Johnson on Friday. Staksrud could lose his spot with a bad loss to Johnson and a commanding win for Goins over Bellamy. To that end, Goins will automatically advance if he beats Bellamy. For Bellamy to advance, he would need to dominate Goins (outscoring him by at least 18 points) and hope for a dominant Staksrud win over Johnson. Those exact results would leave him at 1-2 with a better PD than both Goins and Johnson, sending him to the semifinals.
Mixed Doubles
Pool A
- 1. Anna Leigh Waters/Ben Johns (2-0, PD: 29)
- 2. Rachel Rohrabacher/Christian Alshon (2-0, PD: 12)
- 3. Catherine Parenteau/Gabe Tardio (0-2, PD: -20)
- 4. Tina Pisnik/Federico Staksrud (0-2, PD: -21)
BREAKDOWN: Waters/Johns and Rohrabacher/Alshon will both advance to the semifinals and will face off on Friday for sole possession of first place in Pool A.
Pool B
- 1. Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson (2-0, PD: 32)
- 2. Anna Bright/Hayden Patriquin (1-1, PD: -6)
- 3. Tyra Black/Andrei Daescu (1-1, PD: -12)
- 4. Jessie Irvine/Eric Oncins (0-2, PD: -14)
BREAKDOWN: The Johnsons earned a statement 11-2, 11-4 victory over Bright/Patriquin on Thursday to secure the top spot in Pool B. With Irvine/Oncins unable to advance at 0-2, Bright/Patriquin will face Black/Daescu on Friday with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
Women’s Doubles
Pool A
- 1. Anna Leigh Waters/Anna Bright (2-0, PD: 34)
- 2. Catherine Parenteau/Jade Kawamoto (1-1, PD: -2)
- 3. Kate Fahey/Ting Chieh Wei (1-1, PD: -3)
- 4. Meghan Dizon/Alix Truong (0-2, PD: -29)
BREAKDOWN: Waters/Bright have already secured the top spot in this pool with their point differential. Parenteau/Kawamoto beat Fahey/Wei on Wednesday, so they will advance with a win over Dizon/Truong. Fahey/Wei would need to beat Waters/Bright and hope for Dizon/Truong to beat Parenteau/Kawamoto to advance themselves.
Pool B
- 1. Parris Todd/Rachel Rohrabacher (2-0, PD: 22)
- 2. Tina Pisnik/Lacy Schneemann (1-1, PD: 0)
- 3. Jorja Johnson/Tyra Black (1-1, PD: -1)
- 4. Chao Yi Wang/Kaitlyn Christian (0-2, PD: -21)
BREAKDOWN: Todd/Rohrabacher are in strong position to advance after a 2-0 start. Pisnik/Schneemann pulled off a 7-11, 11-9, 11-1 victory over Johnson/Black on Thursday, so they now control their own destiny; if they beat Wang/Christian on Friday, they will advance in the No. 2 slot. Johnson/Black would need to beat Todd/Rohrabacher and hope for Pisnik/Schneemann to lose to advance.
Men’s Doubles
Pool A
- 1. Ben Johns/Gabe Tardio (2-0, PD: 12)
- 2. Connor Garnett/Riley Newman (1-1, PD: -1)
- 3. Eric Oncins/Dylan Frazier (1-1, PD: -16)
- 4. JW Johnson/CJ Klinger (0-2, PD: 5)
BREAKDOWN: Johnson/Klinger have shockingly been eliminated from semifinal contention despite having a +5 PD through their two three-game losses. With Johns/Tardio already sure to advance to the semifinals, Garnett/Newman and Oncins/Frazier will face off for the second semifinal spot from Pool A.
Pool B
- 1. Hayden Patriquin/Christian Alshon (2-0, PD: 22)
- 2. Noe Khlif/Tyson McGuffin (1-1, PD: 1)
- 3. Andrei Daescu/Federico Staksrud (1-1, PD: -5)
- 4. Jay Devilliers/Jaume Martinez Vich (0-2, PD: -18)
BREAKDOWN: Khlif/McGuffin hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Daescu/Staksrud from their triumph on Wednesday, so they will be in a great spot to advance with a victory over Devilliers/Martinez Vich. If that happens AND if Daescu/Staksrud beat Patriquin/Alshon (they are 0-2 against them in 2026), that would create a tie with three teams holding 2-1 records. Point differential would then become the deciding factor for which two teams advance to Saturday from Pool B.
